Braille For Beginners
We are pleased to present the second of our Braille for Beginners courses, tutored by Melanie Pritchard and following the popular Fingerprint course from RNIB. For more information, please see the registration announcement and registration reminder.
Advocating for Braille in the Wider World
This session will talk you through advocacy strategies that you can use to facilitate access to braille in the wider world. This includes having healthcare and other personal communication sent to you in braille, as well as advocating for braille signage in public places.
If you’d like to join us, and you’ve already joined us for one of our Tuesday evening Masterclasses in 2021, you don’t need to register again. You will receive a reminder email on the day with joining information, so don’t worry if you’ve lost your link.
Book Club
Is the only reason you never judge a book by its cover because you can’t read the cover in the first place? With an Intermediate room for less confident readers and an Advanced room for the more experienced, the Book Club is a small group who meet every week to answer each other’s questions regarding reading using refreshable braille and to practice reading amongst friends.
We are currently reading Kensuke’s Kingdom, by Michael Morpurgo. It can be found in the “Teens” folder on the RNIB Orbit Reader SD card in both grade 1 and grade 2.
This week we will read chapter 5.
The Census Explained
A census is taking place in England and Wales on Sunday 21 March 2021. This is an event which usually only happens once every ten years, and it’s really important that everyone in these two countries can be accounted for on a census form.
But what if you’re blind or partially sighted? We know there is a great deal of anxiety in the community about the accessibility of the census, especially against the backdrop of COVID-19 and the difficulties that this brings in terms of finding sighted help. However, we also know that a great deal is being done to ensure that the census is as easy to complete as possible. The online form has been designed with accessibility in mind, you can receive your access code for the form by text message if you find it difficult to read your post, and you can even call the Census Team and complete the form over the telephone if using the internet is just too daunting for you.
To find out more, join us at this special event, where a team of technology and accessibility experts will be ready to answer all of your questions. If there’s a particular question you’d like us to answer, please just email us.
This session will replace our Friday Open Forum for one week only.
Please spread the word far and wide!

Your Braille Library Questions Answered
RNIB, which operates one of Europe’s largest braille lending libraries, has recently announced changes to the way books will be produced from April 2021. Individual volumes will be more portable, offer freshly embossed braille and are recyclable.
Since the announcement, there has naturally been much discussion on the Braillists Forum and elsewhere about what these changes will mean for braille readers in the UK and around the world.
Join the Braillists Foundation, and our friends from RNIB, to explore braille library changes and have your questions answered.

In our session tonight, we will choose what to read next. The Intermediate and Advanced groups don’t necessarily have to read the same book! If you’ve thought about joining the Book Club, but been put off by the choice of book, why not come along tonight and have your say?
We will then continue reading chapter 5, starting at: “I felt disappointed in her, a bit betrayed even”.
Open Forum
Whilst our formal Friday calls have come to an end, we appreciate that, for many people, the world is still very different to how it was 6 months ago. If you’re still adjusting to the new normal, please feel free to join this informal call to put the world to rights with a member of the Braillists team and other attendees.
